Reading the Runway Revisited & Five "Favorites"

New York Fall Fashion Week is coming up next month, and that reminded me that I never really took a look at many of the shows from spring (which showcase the fall lines). So last night, I sat down at the computer and spent some time looking at what was coming for fall. You don't have to watch the shows to get an idea of upcoming trends; there are lots of articles that synthesize the myriad images and give tidy, digestible lists. Still, I find it fun to get my own take, and just enjoy some of the art and crazy first hand.

Before I show you my five "favorites", the outfits that brought a smile and smirk to my face, I want to reprint some words from a previous post entitled "Reading the Runway." I do so that you may not mistake my friendly fun making for hostility, disdain, or mere disregard.

...it dawned on me that you might be asking why you should even care what is in the designer collections. The fashion world works in such a way that elements from the couture and pret-a-porter shows gradually filter down into the mainstream market, even unto its lowest levels. For example, certain patterns take hold so firmly that three years after they show on the runway they are available on everything, even an umbrella at the dollar store. It's nice to have the chance to interpret a trend on your own terms and while it's still fresh. Also, you are going to be drawing inspiration consciously or unconsciously for what you choose to wear, why not make it an intentional process that allows you to express your own creative genius?

That's how I felt about it last September, and still how I feel today. For tips on how to read the runway, you can check out the original post here. So, without further ado...

I never knew Donna Karan was a Biggie Smalls fan. Well, why else would she have his coat?

  2. The question I always find myself asking is Do these outfits ever get worn afterwards or do they get ceremonially burned?
