WEEKEND DIARIES

Another weekend, come and gone. It was so full that it went even faster than usual! Friday was a mad rush to get things ready for some houseguests coming our way. It shouldn't have been a mad rush; we had a week's notice, but you know (maybe?) how it goes.

Your vacuum broke the day before you went on vacation, and you haven't had a chance to scour Consumer Reports and read endless reviews online before you make what will undoubtedly be a smart purchase, so you have a loaner from a friend that only works when held at just the right angle, which, unfortunately involves you crouching your pregnant self near your be-crumbed carpet. Also, your not yet two year old may or may not run through the entire house with a [leaky sippy] cup of apple juice, spraying carpet, walls, one toddler bed, one pink shag princess rug, and one rocking chair seat. I guess it could have been worse, good thing I wised up to the evils of grape juice long ago.

And then after rushing around to achieve a simple standard of cleanliness and order, you place your children in front of the television with more of said juice, and your sweaty self into the shower. Only to have your peace interrupted minutes later by a small boy who is naked below the waist and spinning a tale about how he can't find his underwear and shorts because he peed in the yard, but it probably was his little sister who did that, not him, or so the story evolves. Sorry, Sherlock, little sis is down for a nap and besides, its your pants that are missing.

When all was said and done, things went off without a hitch, and we had a lovely visit with our friends and their three children. The kids played all sorts of imagination games, including dress up. Its funny, often as parents we try to set up fun outings and special events for our kids, but they usually end up having the best time when they just play. Go figure.

Our guests flew out Saturday evening, and the rest of the weekend was a bit of this and that. My husband's sister stopped by with her family to pick up some of our excess kousa (a Lebanese squash), and the kids played for awhile. That's H with our sweet little niece. I got in a little reading - The Gifts of the Jews: How a Tribe of Desert Nomads Changed the Way Everyone Thinks and Feels. I'm only on chapter three, but I'm really enjoying it. Some readers might find the descriptions of the ancient world a bit much, alternatively titillating and horrifying, but the same could be said of the Old Testament.

I also found time for eating, and consumed this breakfast of champions - half a baguette and a healthy dose of goat cheese. Why am I telling you this? I don't know, either. Maybe just to recommend those take and bake loaves you find at the grocery store. I love those. And finally I love a beautiful bouquet of hostas, and they stay fresh for so long. Try it.

  3. We dragged two screaming children to several different furniture stores to shop for a twin bed...At Pottery Barn outlet, we found a gorgeous $650 bed marked down to $350, and when we went to ring it up...it was $216! I despise furniture shopping, but this was almost worth it ;)
Your kids are adorable. Especially Sherlock :P
