A Beautiful Mess

I'm linking up today with the ever lovely Jessica for What We're Reading Wednesday.

I'm guessing that a lot of you blog readers out there are familiar with the blog A Beautiful Mess. But did you know that the great minds behind the blog, Elsie Larson and Emma Chapman, recently  released a book? I didn't, until I ran across it at the library this weekend.

If you are a blogger or a photographer or an amateur photographer or an Instagrammer or just a person with eyes, check this book out! The book, A Beautiful Mess: Photo Idea Book,  is full of great tips and tricks to inspire and help you create beautiful and interesting images. I so wish I had this book when I first started my blog a year and  a half ago! Some of the tricks I've learned along the way, but I guarantee that this book has something to offer everyone, no matter how seasoned or green.

I haven't quite gotten through all of it, but I've already been motivated in a tangible way. In Chapter 6, "Capture Yourself," one of the inspiriting ideas is to do a Thirty-Day Self Portrait Challenge. It goes like this:
  • Take thirty days of self-portraits.
  • The portraits have to be about you or show you in some way.
  • You must take the pictures yourself.
  • As you go, share your photos with a close friend, your spouse, or online via Facebook or your blog.
Does anybody want to join in the fun? I haven't decided yet whether I'll share daily or do more of a once a week dump, but here's the photo to kick off the challenge.

I took it as soon as the idea struck me. It's five o'clock, and I'm just finishing dinner - you can see my everyday black apron. And I'm feeling just as disheveled as I look. No filter.

Let the games begin.

  1. I'll take your "disheveled" over my own any day. ;-)

    1. Yeah right, lady! And my dishevel was mostly in the hair, which I had to largely crop out to fit the square format and still allow the apron to show. Trust me. It was one of those days where the husband comes home, takes one look at me and asks apprehensively, "How was your day?"

  2. I spy eye shadow! You take disheveled to a whole new level!

    1. Jessica, this is kind of embarrassing to admit, but... I do have on some half smudged off eyeliner, but no eyeshadow. The skin around my eyes is so thin that I have what my mom affectionately calls "raccoon eyes." It's not too bothersome regarding eyelids, but the under eyes, well, sheesh! I need industrial strength concealer!

  3. If this is you "disheveled" ... then, I wonder what word I need to use to describe myself at the end of the day! Living in the south, I have the added bonus of humidity. Being lazy ... er low maintenance, I don't use hair products. Hot kitchen, humid outside = something out of a fairy tale, except I play the part of baba yaga. Seriously, you look great.

  4. THanks, K. And I love the use of baba yoga here! You've really painted a picture (though I'm sure its not that bad :)!

Please leave me a comment. If you don't blog, you may not realize that comments to a blogger are like sunshine to the whole of the photosynthesizing world. What I'm saying is, each comment means a lot! P.S. If you have an email connected to your profile, I'll most likely respond there.
